Being selfish is defined as “lacking consideration for other people, concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.”
However, it can also mean protecting your own interests and even, putting your own needs ahead of others. After all, if you’re not looking out for yourself and your career, who will?
1. Selfish doesn’t mean everything is about you:
But it does mean finding the balance between your own needs and those of the company. If you want to climb the corporate ladder sometimes you need to put yourself ahead of others – so don’t think you always have to take one for the team.
2. Be prepared to pitch in:
Are you the kind of person who never says no when someone (no matter who it is) asks for help? While working towards the greater good is admirable, don’t do it at the sake of your own future.
Of course it’s essential to pitch in and help out from time-to-time, but don’t become so bogged down taking on roles that aren’t actually in your job description, that you end up neglecting the tasks you’re actually required to do.
3. Look after your health:
How many times have you skipped going to the gym, or simply taking a walk, because you had too much work to do? Studies have proven that being selfish and actually sticking to your workout routine is a win-win situation for you and your company. Not only will you return to your desk more invigorated and energised, but you’ll have better focus and ultimately be more productive.
4. Make time for you:
Need to burn the candle at both ends to get a big project done? That’s ok up to a point, but make sure you demand some down time to spend with your family or going to the gym. Your bosses usually won’t volunteer time off, so you’ll have to demand it, but most workplaces are accommodating once they realise you’ll be there when they need you and that you get the job done.
5. Avoid burn out:
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a nice bank somewhere tallying up all the extra hours you put in for some massive future payout? Wake-up! It doesn’t exist. If you keep pulling massive hours with no real breaks you WILL burn out.
